Baked Pizza Rolls for 153 caloies per serving

When I was a child, I attended P.S. 100 elementary school in Brooklyn, N.Y.  While I cannot say that my experiences there were stellar, they did one thing right: Pizza rolls.  A delicious concoction of gooey melted mozzarella cheese and sauce all wrapped up in a fried wonton wrapper.  Michael and I decided to see if we could lighten it up by baking it and still retain some deliciousness.

Here’s the raw ingredients:

Then they turned into this:

They were yummy, but we had a hard time with the filling oozing out of the wonton wrapper before they were done baking.  I ended up scooping some errant filling back into my pizza rolls and baking some more.  The end product was still nostalgic for me, pizzalicious for Michael.

Here he is enjoying them:

Notice the Dunder Mifflin t-shirt I got him for one of his birthdays.  We love the T.V. show “The Office”!

Ingredients serving Calories
8 wonton wrappers 1 wrapper = 80 640
12 Tbs (or 3/4 cup) tomato sauce 1/2 c = 70 105
8 slices mozzarella cheese 1 slice = 60 480

  1 pizza roll = 153

1) Lay out 1 wonton wrapper. Spread 1 Tbs tomato sauce down the middle. Fold mozzarella cheese in half, and put both halves on top of sauce.  Spread ½ Tbs tomato sauce on top of mozzarella cheese.

2) Fold top over sauce/cheese.  Then fold bottom over sauce cheese.  Then fold right side over.  Now, at this point, we put a little egg white wash on the remaining side so that it would stick to the rest of the pizza roll, but I imagine water would work here too. Once all sides are folded, stick in 400 degree oven for 4-5 minutes.

3) Flip the rolls over and bake for another 3 – 4 minutes until desired level of crispiness is achieved.

4) Enjoy!
